Where to look for a place to live in Kauai?

What I am looking for a cheaper place to stay (hard to do in Hawaii I know) that is close to a collage that I could study to become a nurse and a place for a fairly good surfer that is used to no larger than head high waves. I really havn’t looked into it to much yet. A website would be helpful.

If you are looking to go to a school for nursing and head high waves, you really should look into moving to Oahu. Here on Oahu there are many places to surf that range from small to big waves (it depends on the season and the weather) and you’ll have different colleges to choose from (University of Hawaii & it’s smaller community colleges where you can do your pre-nursing pre-reqs and Hawaii Pacific University). Personally I would choose Hawaii Pacific University over UH because it’s a smaller school and you’ll get a more personalized education but it’s also a private university so the tuition will be a bit more.
Kauai is very limited in where you can live and where you can go to school. I think you’ll find it much harder for you to get your education and in the end you’ll have to come to Oahu anyway since the only option for schooling on Kauai is Kauai Community College which feeds in UH Manoa (which is on Oahu).
Good luck!

I live on Kauai and agree with soccerref as far as the schooling goes. The community college is the only college on this island–but I believe they do online courses with the University of Hawaii system. You might want to call the college and get more info if Kauai is really the island you want to live on. If you do decide to stick with Kauai, go to to look for apartments or you can also go to. The college is in the town of Lihue. Good luck…

For rentals, check out the daily paper. You can view the classified ads online and get an idea of what it costs to rent a house or apt. Try one of the property management companies like CW Boggs in Lihue to search for rentals in your price range. Some of the less expensive parts of the island are on the westside, Waimea, Kekaha, but they’re not close to the community college. You picked one of the more expensive islands with few options for college study. You can get much better training as a nurse on Oahu. If you do decide to move to Kauai, try to visit for a couple of weeks to make sure that’s what you want. If you visit and want to save hotel $$, try one of the hostels in town. Kauai International Hostel is decent.
A cheap and clean motel in Lihue is Motel Lani.
